What Is E-mail ?

The first Internet e-mail message was sent in 1971 by an engineer named Ray Tomlinson. Tomlinson's breakthrough was the ability to send messages to other machines on the Internet, using the @ sign to designate the receiving machine.

E-mail messages are simple text messages, simply put, a piece of text sent to a recipient. When you send an e-mail message to a friend, you are sending a piece of text. In the beginning and even today, e-mail messages tend to be short pieces of text, although the ability to add attachments now makes many e-mail messages quite long.

E-mail is so powerful, that the United States Postal Service is losing millions of dollars each year because people are realizing how easy, convenient and cost-effective it is to send an e-mail, verses traditional “snail-mail.”

How E-mail Works

Every day people send each other billions of e-mail messages. If you are online a lot, you yourself may send a dozen or two e-mails each day without even thinking about it. You have probably already received several e-mail messages today. To look at them you use some sort of
e-mail client, a program which allows you to send and receive e-mail messages.

Examples include stand-alone software, FREE web-based e-mail services, and e-mail services that requires payment. No matter which type of client you are using, you know that an e-mail client generally does four things:

1. It shows you a list of all of the messages in your mailbox by displaying the message headers. The header shows you who sent the mail and the subject of the mail, and may also show the time and date of the message and the message size.

2. It lets you select a message header and read the body of the e-mail message.

3. It lets you create new messages and send them. You type in the e-mail address of the recipient and the subject for the message, and then type the body of the message.

4. Most e-mail clients also let you add attachments to messages you send and save the attachments from messages you receive.

I Have An E-mail Address. Can I Get Another?

You can have as many e-mail accounts as you want. Most people have an e-mail account for their business and an e-mail account for their personal use. It’s completely up to you!

How Free Email Works.

You will first need to sign up for a free e-mail account. Upon doing so you will create a unique user name (such as you@cashmasters.com) and password which you will use to log-into the e-mail system so you can check for and read new messages and/or send new messages.

When you are creating a new e-mail account, be sure to write down your user name and password (and keep it in a safe place) so that you don’t forget it.

*Remember, when you log-into the FREE e-mail system, you want to type only your user name and password- not your complete e-mail address.

Correct Example:

User Name:

 you

Password:

 ******

Invalid Example:

User Name:

 you@cashmasters.com

Password:

 ******
